Impact Doors in Cape Coral

The lanai slider is usually the biggest piece of glass on a Cape Coral house and the weakest point in a storm. We replace sliders, front doors and French doors with impact-rated units that meet the same loads as your windows.

Floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors opening onto a tiled pool, a wooden deck and palm trees

In short: an impact sliding glass door in Cape Coral typically costs $3,000–$6,000 for a two-panel opening and $6,000–$11,000 for the wide three- and four-panel lanai openings; impact entry doors run $2,500–$5,000. Each is rated for the same hurricane wind and debris loads as an impact window.

Sliding glass doors to the lanai

On most Cape Coral pool homes the back of the house is mostly glass: a twelve- or sixteen-foot slider onto the lanai, sometimes a corner pocket door that disappears into the wall. Those openings carry the highest wind loads on the house, and the screen enclosure in front of them offers no storm protection at all. When aluminum screen cages fold in a hurricane, the debris lands against exactly that glass.

An impact slider uses laminated glass in a heavier frame and track, built and tested as one unit. Things to settle at the measure:

  • Panel layout. Two, three or four panels, which ones move, and whether a pocket or corner configuration is possible in your wall.
  • Sill height and water rating. A taller sill keeps out more wind-driven rain on an exposed lanai, at the cost of a slightly bigger step.
  • Design pressure. Wide openings at the corner of the house need a higher rating than the same door in a sheltered spot.
  • Frame color and screen. Bronze, white or black, and a new screen door made for the new track.

Impact entry doors

Front doors are opening protection too. An impact entry door is usually fiberglass or aluminum with an impact glass lite, set in a frame anchored into the block. Side lights and transoms beside the door need impact glass as well, or they become the weak point. Most homeowners choose an outswing door in exposed spots, because wind pressure pushes it harder into its frame, though inswing doors with the right rating are common too.

French doors

Pairs of hinged glass doors onto a patio or pool deck. Impact French doors use the same laminated glass as the windows, multi-point locks and a reinforced astragal where the two doors meet. Because they swing, they need clear space in front of them; we check furniture and pool equipment placement before ordering.

Garage doors and the insurance picture

We do not install garage doors, but they belong in the conversation. A wind mitigation inspection looks at every opening, and a non-rated garage door can hold back the opening protection rating even when every window and door is impact glass. If your garage door predates the current code, ask a garage door specialist about an impact-rated replacement or a bracing kit at the same time as your windows.

Installation, step by step

  1. We measure the opening and check the slab and header, which often have dips or old patches under a slider.
  2. The permit goes to the City of Cape Coral, and the door is ordered to size.
  3. The old door and frame come out, the sill area is cleaned down to the slab and any rotted framing replaced.
  4. The new frame is set level on a bed of sealant, anchored per its approval, and the panels are hung and adjusted.
  5. Stucco and interior trim are patched, the old door is hauled away, and the inspector signs it off.

Door prices above are estimates for budgeting. Size, panel count, glass and hardware change them, and only the written quote after we measure is a price you can hold us to.

See the full Cape Coral price guide for windows and shutters as well. If the big slider is the one opening you cannot afford to change yet, accordion shutters are the usual stopgap.

Impact door questions

Are impact sliding glass doors heavy to open?

The panels are heavier than old single-pane sliders, but good units run on stainless or heavy-duty rollers and open with one hand. If your current slider drags, it is usually worn rollers or a bent track, not the weight.

Do impact doors keep water out in a hurricane?

Wind-driven rain is a separate test from debris impact. Look at the door's water rating in its approval, and on an exposed lanai choose a higher sill. We go through the ratings with you at the measure.

Does my garage door count as an opening?

For insurance purposes, yes. The opening protection part of a wind mitigation inspection includes the garage door, so a house with impact glass everywhere but an unrated garage door may not get the top rating.
