In short: we install hurricane impact windows, impact doors and storm shutters in Fort Myers, with the same free measure, written per-opening quote and permit handling we offer in Cape Coral. Standard impact windows typically run $800–$2,000 each installed; your quote sets the real figure.

An older city than the Cape

Fort Myers was a winter town long before Cape Coral was drawn on a map. Thomas Edison first came in 1885 and built Seminole Lodge on the river the following year, and Henry Ford bought the house next door in 1916. Their estates still sit on McGregor Boulevard, and the streets around them hold some of the oldest houses we work on: bungalows, frame cottages and Mediterranean revival homes with window openings in sizes no factory stocks. Those openings get measured with extra care, and sometimes need custom shapes or mulled units to keep the look of the house.

Historic districts and design review

Several neighborhoods near downtown and along McGregor are designated historic districts, Edison Park and Seminole Park among them. Exterior changes there, windows included, can need review before a permit is issued, and divided-lite patterns, frame profiles and colors may matter. Impact products exist for nearly every traditional style, so the answer is rarely no; it is just slower. If your house is in a district, we build the review into the timeline from day one.

River condos and high-rise glass

Downtown and along the Caloosahatchee, a lot of the glass we see is in condominium towers. Two things change there. First, the association usually decides which product lines and frame colors owners may install, and often whether shutters or impact glass is required. Second, the Florida Building Code treats glazing more than 30 feet above the ground differently: it is tested against small debris rather than the 9-pound timber used for low openings, but it faces much higher wind pressure. We work from the building's approved specification and handle the paperwork the association asks for.

What Ian did on this side of the river

Storm surge from Hurricane Ian reached five to eight feet above ground in parts of Fort Myers in September 2022, highest along the river and the low streets near it. Many homes that took water also lost windows and sliders to wind and debris. If yours were repaired in a hurry afterward with whatever was available, it is worth checking whether the replacements were impact rated and permitted, because an insurer's wind mitigation inspector will ask for the product approvals.

City permit or county permit

Plenty of homes with a Fort Myers address are not in the City of Fort Myers at all; much of the area around Gateway, Daniels Parkway and the McGregor corridor south of the city line is unincorporated Lee County. The city and the county each run their own building departments and their own forms. We confirm which one covers your parcel, file with the right one, and meet their inspector.

Shutters are a big part of Fort Myers searches

More people in Fort Myers look for hurricane shutters than for impact windows, and for good reason: on a house that is otherwise in good order, accordions on the lanai and roll-downs on the hard-to-reach glass protect the openings for a fraction of the cost. The hurricane shutters page compares the types; the same products and prices apply here.

Prices in Fort Myers

We price Fort Myers jobs exactly the way we price Cape Coral ones. A standard impact window typically costs $800 to $2,000 installed, a two-panel impact slider $3,000 to $6,000 and accordion shutters $15 to $30 per square foot. These are estimates rather than quotes, and historic or high-rise jobs can sit outside them; the full tables are in the price guide.

Fort Myers questions

Who issues the window permit in Fort Myers?

Inside the city limits, the City of Fort Myers. Many addresses with a Fort Myers mailing address are actually in unincorporated Lee County, which runs its own permitting. We check which one applies to your parcel before applying.

Can I put impact windows in a historic house?

Usually yes, but homes in a designated historic district can need design review before exterior changes, and the city may care about the window style and the look of the frames. We check your address and bring options that keep the house's character.

My condo is on a high floor. Is the glass different?

It can be. Under the Florida Building Code, glass more than 30 feet above grade has to pass the small-missile test rather than the large-missile test, though wind pressures up there are higher. Condo associations usually set the product rules, so we start with theirs.

We also work in North Fort Myers, all over Cape Coral and out on Pine Island.
